It may not seem like it but, WLJS 91.9 FM has been part of the
fabric of JSU for thirty-seven years. From its inception, it has been
a radio station run by students, for students. Many of our alumni
got their first exposure to working in a radio station at WLJS and
moved on to a career in broadcasting after graduating.
Those of us who never worked there were also impacted by the
station as listeners. WLJS has kept us entertained, informed, and
involved in campus life. Now we have an opportunity to give back.
That is the goal of Project 92.
Project 92 is a fundraising effort led by WLJS alumni, in conjunction
with the university, to ensure our students have the resources
available to prepare them for a career in broadcasting. In addition
to providing scholarship assistance to students in need, one of the
greatest needs at the station is equipment upgrades. From
discussions with students, faculty, and administrators, the Project
92 Alumni Team has identified three tiers of priority equipment
ON AIR STUDIO UPGRADES - $6,000
PRODUCTION STUDIO UPGRADES - $18,000
REMOTE BROADCASTING EQUIPMENT UPGRADES - $6,000
Imagine what your home would be like if you were still using
1970s equipment. Many of us would be using rotary dial phones
and watching basic cable TV. Very few of us would be using
a computer, or a microwave oven, and forget about a cell phone.
Yet, our communication students are being asked to operate,
at times, as if it is still the ‘70s.
Over the years there have been equipment upgrades made at the
station; however, some equipment has been in use since the
station fi rst went on the air in 1975. Technology is rapidly changing
and if our students are going to become game-changers in the
fi eld of broadcasting they need to be trained using the latest
You can help make this a reality by supporting Project 92.
WLJS – Still something to crow about!
